COUSIN’S LAW: Missing Child Legislation
Lawmakers will have a lot on their plate when the next legislative session starts in January. The so called Cousin’s Law is one of just one of those items.
Following the disappearance of Lyric Cook and Elizabeth Collins in July, a grassroots movement to change the systems used to alert Iowan’s of missing children was started.
The proposed law would help in situations where Amber Alert rules do not apply. A rough draft of the bill would focus on new media, using text messages to alert people of a missing child within an hour and a half of their disappearance.
Proponents say this law not only honors Lyric and Elizabeth, but will help other kids. Those against it say portions of the bill that allow volunteer home searches are too intrusive.
A petition backing the Cousins Law already has more than 10,000 signatures.
